350 Mass - Newton Node

Mission: 350 Mass Newton node is the Newton branch of 350 Massachusetts, a statewide movement to end the destructive dominance of the fossil fuel industry and transition to a just, equitable, and clean energy economy.

The Newton node was established in 2013, and since then we’ve made serious progress on climate action locally through advocacy, and by partnering with environmental, climate and social justice groups.

As a result, Newton’s community electricity aggregation contract now includes 80% Class 1 New England renewable energy in its default. We have a Climate Action Plan and are poised to launch a major retrofitting effort to electrify our homes to meet aggressive metrics for carbon emissions reductions. Our engagement—through public testimony, letters to our city council members, standouts and forums—has led to new commitments to “passive house” and fossil-free construction on two major mixed-use development projects. We’ve also joined forces with other nodes to lobby for climate legislation, to end new fossil fuel infrastructure, to hold financial institutions accountable and to lift up and center frontline communities fighting for environmental justice and jobs. Our strength comes from coalition-building, and we’ve worked with many other orgs to achieve these wins.

No matter what your interest, if you care about the climate, you can put your talents and your energy to good use with us. We do pretty much everything from art builds to drafting legislation, so please become a member of 350 Mass and join us at our next node meeting. The climate can’t wait!
